Closed Loop - Suction Assisted Laryngoscopy Airway Decontamination

After meeting Dr. Jim DuCanto in 2022 at the IAC conference in Lake Placid, I just knew I had to make my own SALAD Mannequin. I dusted off my station’s old Laradol Larry, drove with my now-wife to Lowes, spent some quality time in the plumbing and fittings aisle, and recorded the whole thing. The one I wanted to build would both “suck” and “puke” rather than the first prototypes that required 2 different containers. The goal was to create something that is:

• Easy to setup

• Easy to clean

  The TL;DR is that my first SALAD Manifold (a suction canister that both Sucks and Pukes) broke. The one after that did, too. I got the third one right, but it was so expensive to build. After tons of experimentiaon, Jim built a CL_SALAD manifold that really outperforms commercially-made solutions.

  After some testing, we decided to bulk-order the materials to create a kit to reduce cost. A commercially-made SALAD Mannequin costs multiple thousands of dollars; practical high-fidelity airway management training is now available for under $100.
